Concerted Action
Since the beginning of the new financial year, our office has been buzzing with activity. A small group of students from institutes across the country are doing their summer internship with Rang De. We are running short of space, but the entire office has come alive with the refreshing energies that the students bring with them.
This is also an exciting time for the team with change in leadership with Ram, the other co-founder of Rang De taking over as CEO and spear heading Rang De's growth for the next financial year. In this edition we bring you snippets from the action centre.
Consolidation, sustainability and making our processes seamless, is what we aim to do.

Some of our new initiatives
Field Mentorship - A pilot run in Trichy is being done to identify leaders/role models within the community. Their task will be to mentor entrepreneurs, motivate them and help them scale up.
Corporate partnerships - A corporate connect program where any corporate can decide how they want to engage with Rang De. For instance Kemin, who make nutritious additives for animal feed, invested in livestock and dairy related activities. Another corporate came forward to adopt a village and funded entrepreneurs from Vandavasi.
We look forward to more such corporate partnerships and help in our campaigns by selling our gift vouchers, displaying our posters, and bookmarks.

Rang De gift vouchers - Help someone else to spread the colours of joy by gifting them vouchers that can be bought online or offline from Rang De team members.
A Wellness quotient has been developed to inform our social investors on how their borrowers are faring, in different aspects of their life and their special abilities and / or shortcomings.

What a knock out!!!
May 31 2009 was marked as the red letter day in Rang De's calendar. Our first marathon event-the Bangalore Sun feast 10k run. Our aim was to create awareness and to "Knock Out Poverty in India" by - you guessed it - raising social investments instead of donations.
 |
 |
The Warm Up
The excitement was palpable in our office, with training schedules being worked out and notes being exchanged on diet tips, only to be broken when work demanded travel into remote areas. Our greatest motivator was one of our social investors and die-hard supporters Harsh Thakkar.
Archana our colleague in Bangalore did most of the liaison work and a workshop was held close to the event, in collaboration with "Fitness One". It turned out to be a useful session that gave important tips and points to keep in mind on the day of the run.
D Day
An early morning start to ‘dress’ the part and on to the venue wearing boxing gloves and with punching bags hanging around our necks.
Rang De's runners in the 10K category did us proud and clocked great timings to finish the run in under an hour. The rest of us opted for the 5 kilometer Majja Run which turned out to be just that. Majja Hi Majja.
People from different walks of life participated in the marathon and came to support the causes dear to them. Many had gone to great lengths to design elaborate costumes to try and win the Kingfisher best costume prize.
Our boxing gloves and punching bags may not have won the prize, but it sure made heads turn and many on the streets joined the “knock out poverty” chorus led by Gnan.

The Final Outcome
The Final Outcome
We were able to attract 50 new social investors in a span of 3 weeks, thanks to a viral online marathon run on Rang De's portal.
And as Archana aptly summed it up “All in all, we all had loads of fun. Hopefully the next time around, we will make it a point to run as well!!

Tribal Talk
One of our recent evaluation trips in Tamil Nadu took us to a small village called Pudidivakkam. A small settlement of identical neat mud homes with thatched roofs, housing about thirty families. The settlement was set up two years ago by the government to rehabilitate tribals from different villages and provide them with special aid. All the basic amenities have been provided for and ASSCOD our field partner works hand in hand with the government to encourage them to educate their children and set up their own enterprises. Creating awareness about health and hygiene and environmental issues like planting and nurturing trees are other areas being tackled with very positive results. |
