Thounaojam Inaobi Devi

Thoubal | Manipur | Weaver

Weaving is not just a means to earn a livelihood for the people of Manipur. It is believed that the God of Handicrafts himself taught them textile weaving. Manipuri girls learn this art from a tender age. They not only provide clothing for their family but it also becomes a source of income. Thounaojam Inaobi is one such woman. She weaves shawls which are locally known as "Pala-phi". These are presented to dignitaries and respected people in religious ceremonies in their culture. This results in a constant demand for them. She has been doing this for the last ten years. Lately, she has been trying to increase her output but high costs of raw materials have proven to be a roadblock. She will utilise the loan amount to acquire raw materials like cotton thread and starch to weave into the vibrant and colourful shawls which have demand not only locally, but even internationally. read more
