Rang De's Impact partner Access Livelihood Consulting India is a Hyderbad based social enteprise that has been working with marginalised communities like small farmers, weavers, dairy farmers, tribals etc to improve their livelihoods and nurture community owned enterprises and institutions.
In 2013, ALC promoted Neelamani Durga Tribal Farmers Producer company with 200 farmers from Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. Due to the low literacy level amongst the community members and poor access to financial services, the farmers have to depend on informal credit sources to meet ends meet during the plantation and harvesting season. Middle men or money lenders would traditionally offer small loans at high interest rate and in return take the harvested crop from the farmers at below par market rates.
Neelamani Durga has been instrumental in breaking this exploitative relationship by offering input services, credit support and procurement services to its member farmers. With the previous Rang De loan, now repaid in full, the producer company bought quality farm input supplies in bulk and offered in kind loans to its members at low interest loan. The membership has steadily grown in number as more and more farmers see the benefit of associating with the producer company.
The producer company requires a loan of Rs 10 lakhs to purchase input supplies this season and also to pplan for the procurement of the produce during the harvest season. Do extend support by lending a small amount to make this community managed and owned enterprise flourish.
