Meliaputti is a village located in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh and in March 2017 a farmer producers company was promoted with 1000 farmers was promoted by Rang De's partner organization, Access Livelihoods Consulting India in the region with financial support from NABARD.
Tribal communities have historically depended on the forest for sustenance. Land holdings are fragmented (90% of the farmers belonging to and due to the nature of the terrain in Srikakulam the villages are settled at the top or bottom of the hills. Farmers grow a mixture of staples such as paddy and millets as well as cash crops (including cashew and pineapple).
The producer company aims to provide an integrated model of collective business with financial, technical and market linkages that will ensure economic empowerment of tribal farmers from Meliaputti.
Meliaputti is seeking a loan of Rs 10 lakhs to procure agricultural inputs (such as seeds and fertilizers) for its member farmers. These input services would be provided at a reasonable cost to the farmers thus ensuring that they don't have to rely on intermediaries and wholesale buyers for credit access. In the long run, ALC believes that by liberating farmers from the clutches of exploitative credit sources it will allow them greater freedom to market their produces at prices which are fair.
Do consider lending support to this collective of small farmers from Meliaputti and help this fledgling enterprise flourish.
