About SOFA

Tribal Health Initiative started out in 1993 with the efforts of two doctors- Dr. Regi George and Dr. LalithaRegi, as an outpatient facility in a hut in Sittilingi village. Their goal was to provide better healthcare to the Malevasi tribal population of the region. What began as a group of four farmers became a full-fledged registered society of 300 certified organic farmers under the banner of Sittilingi Valley Organic Farmers Association (SOFA) in 2009. Sittilingi Valley Organic Farmers Association was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1972 in March, 2009.The organic practices promoted by SOFA help the farmer become self-dependent for inputs. In November 2015, to manage the growing sales of the organic farmers association, Sittilingi Valley Organic Farmers Producer Company Limited was formed. It is a platform to help with the marketing of Svad products and expand the customer base from retailers and exporting agencies, to direct consumers. There are currently 1000 shareholders in the company, all organic farmers and members of the women’s entrepreneurial groups. They are engaged in organic agricultural production of millets, pulses, groundnut, turmeric and cotton as well as post-production value addition practices such as processing, storage, manufacturing of biscuits, papad, soaps, spices mix, health mixes and packaging for the same. All the farming practices are in line with the philosophy of the organic farmers association, following ecological sustainable and economically viable methods of farming that preserve the natural environment instead of damaging it.
