It is heartening to note that students from rural regions are opting for tertiary education in India. Job prospects in small towns and cities offer attractive career options that provide stability and a steady income to a rural family.

While many families are reluctant to approach banks, small affordable loans are fast becoming a reasonable option for higher education as is demonstrated by Rang De borrower Sonu Khan.

19-year-old Sonu is a student of SSISM pursuing a degree in Biotechnology. Her father earns a living as a tractor driver and works on other villagers’ fields particularly during the harvest and ploughing season.

His monthly income varies between Rs.5000 – Rs.9000 and is the only earning member of the family.

Sonu has three siblings. Her older sister completed her bachelor’s degree and is now enrolled in an MSc programme. Her younger brother recently is studying at SSISM while the youngest is at school.

The village of Pipliyanankar in the Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh is home to some of our borrowers. They study at SSISM, Sant Singa Ji Institute of Science and Management, an institute which goes out of its way to bring rural students into its classrooms.

Representatives from the institute scout local schools for promising students and approach parents to convince them to consider higher education for their wards. Most of the time, rural students do not have the opportunity to study further as many of them come from poor families. But with the help of affordable education loans, these young people are now able to enrol in degree courses.

Rani Panwar is one such student pursuing her final year in Biotechnology at SSISM. Ever since her father passed away, she and her mother have been living with their grandfather and an uncle. Her family does not own any agricultural land and her uncle, who drives tractors, is at present the only earning member of the family.

Rani is a keen student and wishes to pursue an MSc after she earns her degree. She has secured an average score of 61% over the past few years and works with discipline. She makes good use of the institute’s resources which offers coaching classes to interested students.
