Aside from struggling to meet educational costs, their family’s personal circumstances greatly affect their performance. For SSISM student Manish Jat, his journey to college has not been an easy one.
Manish belongs to an impoverished family of farm labourers living in Ghodighat Khategaon village, Madhya Pradesh.
Their sole possession is a cow.
Manish’s family consists of his father and grandmother who support the household by working in a field. Put together, they earn between Rs.30000-Rs.35000 per annum. Of this, Rs.10000 goes towards paying for Manish’s education.
Like many other landless folk, they have no home of their own and lived in rented homes. Eventually, paying a monthly rent became a burden for the family. The owner of the field in which they worked permitted them to move into a small house situated in the field.
They have been living there ever since.

A third year BCA student, Praveen exudes confidence when he speaks. The son of a tailor from Nemawar, Madhya Pradesh, he has made the best of all the opportunities that have come his way.
From the very start, the future appeared to hold little prospect for Praveen as his father earned very little and could not support the family properly.
But as it turned out, Praveen was a bright student and scored 72% in his class 12 exams. He joined SSISM’s BCA programme and eventually began working as his father became ill and could not work.
With the help of an education loan and salary from his new job, he managed to pay the course tuition fees and continued studying to earn his degree.
During our conversation with him, we learnt that he is passionate about dancing and has won many dance competitions. He recently participated in a dance-off held in Nemawar and won Rs.11000 as prize money which he used to renovate his home. He now dances professionally and will be seen in a local reality show called Dance Indore Dance.
